Time Calculator: Add, Subtract, and Scale Hours, Minutes, and Seconds

A time calculator adds, subtracts, and scales durations without the slips that creep in when you do the same sums by hand. You type in days, hours, minutes, and seconds, and you get a clean answer in the same units, with every carry handled for you. It sounds simple until the minutes column passes 60 or a subtraction needs borrowing, and that is where most people go wrong.

Durations are not clock times. A clock time says when something happens, like 3:45; a duration says how long something lasts, like 3 hours 45 minutes. Mixing the two up causes most wrong answers in time math.

How this time calculator works

The tool works in three steps. First it converts every duration into seconds, the one unit that never needs carrying: one minute is 60 seconds, one hour is 3,600, and one day is 86,400. Once both durations are in seconds, the arithmetic is plain addition or subtraction.

Step two applies your operation to those second totals, and step three converts the result back, carrying at 60 for seconds and minutes and at 24 for hours.

Every input, explained

Duration A. The first length of time, in days, hours, minutes, and seconds; leave unused boxes at zero. Duration B. The second length of time, entered the same way. For subtraction, A is what you start from and B is what you take away.

Add or Subtract. Add combines the two durations into one longer stretch; Subtract finds the difference, useful for time left, time used, or time over. The Scale duration. A separate section for one duration you want to stretch or shrink, such as a shift repeated across a week.

The scale factor, and multiply or divide. The factor is the number you multiply or divide by: 3 triples a duration, 2 doubles it, 0.5 halves it. Splitting a 1 hour task by 2 gives 30 minutes each for two people.

Overflow boxes. The boxes accept values past their usual limit. Type 90 in the seconds box and it counts as 1 minute 30 seconds; 90 in the minutes box counts as 1 hour 30 minutes. That's handy for figures pasted from a timesheet or a stopwatch.

A worked example: adding two long durations

Start with the add case: 2 days 5 hours 30 minutes plus 1 day 20 hours 45 minutes. In seconds, that's 192,600 plus 161,100, which is 353,700 seconds, converting back to 4 days 2 hours 15 minutes. Column check: 3 days, 25 hours and 75 minutes, carried to the same answer.

Now a subtraction that needs borrowing: 8 hours 15 minutes minus 6 hours 45 minutes. You can't take 45 minutes from 15 minutes, so borrow 1 hour from the 8 hours and turn it into 60 minutes. That leaves 7 hours 75 minutes, minus 6 hours 45 minutes is 1 hour 30 minutes. In seconds: 29,700 minus 24,300 is 5,400 seconds.

The overflow case shows why the boxes accept big numbers: 2 hours 45 minutes plus 90 minutes, where the tool reads 90 minutes as 1 hour 30 minutes, giving 4 hours 15 minutes. The seconds check agrees: 9,900 plus 5,400 is 15,300 seconds.

Scaling is where the seconds method really pays off. Take 1 hour 20 minutes 30 seconds (4,830 seconds). Times 3 gives 14,490 seconds, which is 4 hours 1 minute 30 seconds. Divided by 2 gives 2,415 seconds, which is 40 minutes 15 seconds.

The weekly total ties it together: five shifts of 7 hours 45 minutes give 38 hours 45 minutes (139,500 seconds). As a decimal that's 38.75 hours, since 45 minutes is three quarters of an hour, not 38.45 hours.

Timesheets are where the minutes to decimal hours conversion trips people up most. Payroll systems want decimal hours, so 45 minutes must become 0.75, not 0.45. The rule is simple: divide the minutes by 60, so 15 minutes is a quarter hour, 30 is half, and 45 is three quarters.

Practical tips

For payroll, work in seconds or decimal hours and keep one system throughout. Switching systems inside one timesheet is how a 15 minute error sneaks in unnoticed. Check any answer that matters by converting back to seconds.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add 2 days 5 hours 30 minutes and 1 day 20 hours 45 minutes with this time calculator?

Enter the first duration in Duration A and the second in Duration B, choose Add, and the answer is 4 days 2 hours 15 minutes, which is 353,700 seconds.

Can this tool find the time between two clock readings, like 9:00 and 17:30?

No. This tool adds durations, it does not find the time between two clock readings. Work out the duration first, for example 17:30 minus 9:00 is 8 hours 30 minutes, then use this tool on that duration.

What does a negative answer mean when I subtract durations?

It means Duration B was larger than Duration A, so the subtraction went past zero. Swap the durations and the same answer comes out positive.

Why does typing 90 in the seconds box give 1 minute 30 seconds?

The boxes accept overflow values and the tool normalizes them before calculating. Ninety seconds is more than a minute, so 60 of those seconds become 1 minute and 30 stay as seconds.

How do I convert 38 hours 45 minutes to decimal hours for a timesheet?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. Forty five minutes divided by 60 is 0.75, so 38 hours 45 minutes is 38.75 decimal hours, never 38.45.
