Conception Calculator

Running the clock backwards: when conception most likely happened.

A calendar can't pin conception to a single day, ovulation shifts, and sperm can wait up to five days. That's why the answer is a most-likely date inside an honest window, not a claim about one specific day.

Conception Calculator: Working Backwards to a Likely Date

A conception calculator runs the pregnancy calendar backwards, turning a due date or a last period into a most likely conception date with a window around it. It doesn't watch anything happen inside the body, and it doesn't read a test result. It takes one date you know, applies the standard lengths of pregnancy, and gives you a date range you can discuss with a clinician.

People reach for this kind of date for plain reasons: to make sense of an early scan date, or to check whether a due date lines up with the cycle they remember. A single date feels certain. The honest answer is a window.

How this conception calculator works

The tool offers two starting points. If you know a due date, pick the Due date mode. If you know the first day of your last period, pick the Last period mode. Both modes give the same three outputs: a most likely conception date, a likely window around it, and one implied date.

Two day counts carry the calculation. Standard gestation is 280 days, or 40 weeks, from the first day of the last period. Conception to birth is 266 days, or 38 weeks. From a due date, the tool subtracts 266 days for conception and 280 days for the implied last period. From a last period, it adds the cycle length minus 14 days for conception, then 266 days for the due date.

Both modes exist because neither starting date is perfect. A due date is itself an estimate, often set from an early scan or a last period. A last period is a date you can often remember, yet ovulation doesn't always fall on the same cycle day.

Every input, explained

Due date mode. Enter the due date you were given by a clinician or an early scan. The tool subtracts 266 days to find conception and places a window of 7 days on either side of it.

Last period mode. Enter the first day of your last period, plus your cycle length in days. The tool adds your cycle length minus 14 days to find conception, then sets a window from 5 days before conception to 2 days after it, leaning backwards because sperm can survive up to 5 days.

Cycle length. This is the number of days from the first day of one period to the first day of the next, and the tool accepts whole numbers from 20 to 45 days. If your cycles vary, use an average over several recent months.

What counts as the first day of a period. Day one is the first day of full flow, not a day of light spotting beforehand. Counting spotting as day one moves every date downstream.

A worked example: a last period of 1 January 2026

Take a last period starting on 1 January 2026 with a 28 day cycle. The tool adds 28 minus 14 days, which is 14 days, to 1 January, giving a most likely conception date of 15 January 2026. The window runs from 5 days before that date to 2 days after it, which is 10 to 17 January 2026. Adding 266 days gives an implied due date of 8 October 2026.

Now run the same case from the other direction, starting from the due date of 8 October 2026. Subtracting 266 days lands on 15 January 2026 again, and subtracting 280 days gives an implied last period of 1 January 2026. The window, though, is different: due date mode gives 8 to 22 January 2026, while last period mode gave 10 to 17 January.

Cycle length changes everything. Keep the last period at 1 January 2026 and change only the cycle length. A 24 day cycle gives conception on 11 January 2026 and a due date of 4 October 2026. A 28 day cycle gives conception on 15 January 2026 and a due date of 8 October 2026. A 32 day cycle gives conception on 19 January 2026 and a due date of 12 October 2026. An 8 day spread in cycle length moves conception and the due date by the same 8 days.

Cycle lengthMost likely conceptionLikely windowImplied due date
24 days11 January 20266 to 13 January 20264 October 2026
28 days15 January 202610 to 17 January 20268 October 2026
32 days19 January 202614 to 21 January 202612 October 2026

One more case, so the pattern is clear. A last period starting on 5 March 2026 with a 28 day cycle gives conception on 19 March 2026, a window of 14 to 21 March 2026, and a due date of 10 December 2026.

Common mistakes

Practical tips

Use an average cycle length over several months if you track your periods, since one odd month shouldn't set the answer. If you have both a last period and a due date, run both modes and compare them. If the modes disagree by more than a few days, bring both results to your appointment and let the clinician weigh them against an ultrasound, which overrides calendar math when they disagree.

Frequently asked questions

If my last period started on 1 January 2026 and my cycle is 28 days, when did conception most likely happen?

Most likely on 15 January 2026, inside a window of 10 to 17 January 2026, with an implied due date of 8 October 2026.

Why does the due date mode give a wider window than the last period mode?

Because the tool uses different window rules for the two modes. Due date mode places 7 days on either side of conception, while last period mode runs from 5 days before to 2 days after.

Does a longer cycle push conception later?

Yes. From a last period of 1 January 2026, a 24 day cycle gives conception on 11 January, a 28 day cycle gives 15 January, and a 32 day cycle gives 19 January.

Can this conception calculator settle paternity?

No, it can't. It gives an estimated window built on average cycle lengths, and windows from different possible fathers can overlap. Paternity needs proper testing.

What should I do if an ultrasound date disagrees with the calculator?

Trust the ultrasound. An early ultrasound measures the pregnancy directly, while the calculator only works from remembered dates and average cycle lengths.

A conception date matters a lot to the person asking, and it stays uncertain no matter how neatly a tool prints it. Use it as a starting point for a conversation, a date range written down and taken to a scan appointment. The CalcMega Blog has more plain guides on cycle dates and pregnancy timing.
